The Awards areis also supported by renown Australian and New Zealand businesses operating in Taiwan, including the ANZ Bank, Macquarie Capital, CPA Australia, Zespri, Blackmores and Orient Europharma.

The six winners in the five categories were:

Ansett Aviation Asia – The Australia-Taiwan Business Excellence Award

Ansett Aviation Asia (Ansett) was established as a subsidiary of Ansett Aviation Training in Melbourne, Australia. The facility commenced operations in 2016. Located 10 minutes from Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, the center was designed as a state of the art training facility for commercial aviation pilots in Taiwan and the Asia-Pacific. Leveraging Taiwan’s strategic location and technical expertise, the facility aims to become a world-class training provider thereby putting Taiwan in the spotlight of aviation training and safety. Currently featuring two new full-flight simulators, Ansett will serve the training needs for Asia’s continuing airline growth over coming years.

It is presently training pilots from Australia, India, Cambodia, Korea, Philippines and Vietnam, generating foreign income from countries covered by the Taiwan government’s New Southbound Policy. This aligns with Taiwan’s intentions to become an aviation hub. Pilot training is a high value-added segment with strong growth potential due to a worldwide pilot shortage. Ansett has invested over US$30 million in the start-up phase which will gradually increase to over US$50 million and is the largest Australian investment in Taiwan in recent years.

GNS Science – The New Zealand-Taiwan Business Excellence Award

GNS Science is a world-leading geothermal energy consultancyt. They have supported the global geothermal community for more than 50 years with experience in over 25 countries, including, for the first time this year, Taiwan. The Taiwanese government has a renewable energy target of 20% of Taiwan’s electricity needs by 2025 and GNS is working with local organisations, both public and

private, to reach this goal. While Taiwan has significant geothermal energy assets it currently lacks the necessary skills and experience to sustainably exploit them. GNS is actively supporting policy makers, project developers, scientists and regulators to take full advantage of this energy source under our feet.

The International School of Technology and Management (ISTM) at Feng Chia University – The Australia-Taiwan Business Partnership Award

Feng Chia University’s International School of Technology and Management (ISTM) has created an innovative higher education model. With all English-taught courses and additional language proficiency classes, ISTM can partner its degree courses with world-renowned tertiary institutions. In recent years, it has developed an undergraduate 2+2 business program with Australia’s RMIT University. Students in this Business and Innovation program complete a two year core curriculum in business at Feng Chia University and then continue studies at RMIT in the third and fourth years. The first two years at ISTM prepare students for study abroad. Successful students are awarded degrees from both universities.

International collaboration of this kind requires rigorous bilateral discussion to standardize and mutually recognize admission criteria, credit requirements, language proficiency and graduation criteria.

The partnership between RMIT and Feng Chia allows students to enjoy diverse and versatile learning and living environments. Other benefits include cultural adaptability, international mobility and global networking opportunities.

Bureau of Energy, MOEA– The New Zealand-Taiwan Business Partnership Award

The Bureau of Energy (BOE) is responsible for all aspects of energy policy in Taiwan including transitioning to ‘green’ energy sources.

Taiwan depends on imports for 98% of its energy consumption, so more energy independence and diversification of energy sources are important. BOE has provided significant leadership in green energy policy leading to a substantial level of development activity.

While BOE’s focus has been on solar and wind power, they have also been actively involved in investigating geothermal energy, a field where New Zealand has unparalleled experience.  Located on the Pacific ring of fire, geothermal energy has the potential to provide Taiwan with baseload power and become one of the most important renewable energies.

BOE has supported New Zealand organisations in gaining a better understanding of Taiwan and facilitated Taiwanese people and organisations in learning more about geothermal energy from their New Zealand counterparts.

BOE responsibilities include energy policy, regulation, energy management, new energy technology research and development. In 2016, the Taiwan government initiated the policy of energy transformation and electricity industry reform, and BOE is committed to the promotion of renewable energy such as wind power and solar photovoltaics. BOE will continue promoting geothermal energy and other renewable options towards the goal of being nuclear-free by 2025.

Green Energy and Environment Research Laboratories, ITRI – The New Zealand-Taiwan Business Partnership Award

The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) is one of the world’s leading technology R&D institutions, innovating for a better future. To drive sustainable development, ITRI’s Green Energy and Environment Laboratories hasve devoted significant resources to developing novel green energy and environment technologies, including geothermal energy.

Taiwan depends on imports for 98% of its energy consumption, so achieving some measure of energy independence and diversification of energy sources are important strategic objectives.  ITRI has been proactively investigating geothermal energy, with which is an energy source in which New Zealand has unparalleled development experience.

ITRI has worked with a number of New Zealand geothermal-focused individuals and organisations and has thereby taken a scientific leadership position on this yet untapped significant energy source. ITRI has consistently supported New Zealand organisations in gaining a better understanding of Taiwan and has facilitated Taiwanese professionals and organisations in learning more about geothermal energy from their New Zealand counterparts.

New Taipei City Yuteh Private School– The Queensland-Taiwan Business Excellence Award

New Taipei City Yuteh Private School is a sixteen year bilingual academic institution comprised of four sections: the Kindergarten, Elementary School, Junior High School and Senior High School. The institution fosters learning using both English and Chinese instruction. In this way, Yuteh hopes to lay a solid bilingual foundation in students’ daily lives.

It is the first Taiwanese school to work with Education Queensland International and is also the first school to collaborate academically with any foreign government. In August 2018, the school passed the certification of Education Queensland International and thus gained approval of the Queensland Government for further cooperation. Yuteh now sends students to Brisbane each year for study, and the high school’s international program enables students to apply directly to Australia's universities while remaining in Taiwan and with exemption from TOEFL, IELTS, and other preparatory courses. This joint venture will help transform students into excellent leaders who can contribute positively to the social, economic and cultural ties of both countries.
