Taiwan's Energy Market Outlook
Taiwan’s energy consumption was valued at 270 TWh (11.3 MWh/capita), placing it in the top 20 energy market globally, of a similar size to Australia 5x the size of New Zealand, making energy an important topic. Given it is an island with little natural domestic resources, Taiwan has historically relied on importing its energy source, primarily from coal, gas and nuclear (in 2021, coal was 43%, coal 35% and nuclear 11%). Like many energy markets, in April 2021, Taiwan has committed to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 and lifting energy generated by renewable sources to 60% - 70% by 2050.
